Black Coffee's biography is a story of resilience and determination. He was born in Durban, South Africa, on 11 March 1976[^1^]. His real name is Nkosinathi Innocent Maphumulo. He grew up in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, where he faced many challenges and hardships. His mother, Faith Dandala, raised him single-handedly after separating from his father.
When he was 14 years old, he was involved in a car accident that left him with a permanent injury on his left arm. He did not let this setback stop him from pursuing his passion for music. He joined his cousin's sound system crew and started deejaying at parties and events. He also enrolled at Technikon Natal to study jazz music, but he dropped out due to financial constraints.
He then moved to Johannesburg to pursue his music career. He established his own record label, Soulistic Music, in 2005 and released his debut self-titled album. The album was well-received and showcased his unique blend of house, soul, R&B and jazz.
